Ved store høytrykk over Skandinavia danner det seg et vindvakuum over Norge, med svake nordlige og østlige vinder. For oss som bor på østlandet blir det lite vind. Litt lokalkunnskap om en av landets beste og mest ukjente traktfjorder blir god å ha da.
High pressure over Scandinavia creates a stable no-wind situation in Norway, with low northern and eastern winds. When you are living in the south, these directions are no good. Luckily I happen to know the well preserved secret of Flemma, so a 600 km drive to get some wind is a safe bet!
Flemma ligger ytterst i Sunndalsfjorden og klemmes markert sammen av 6-800 meter høye fjell på hver side. På nordlige retninger med sol får man solgangsbris i tillegg til trakteffekt. Det kan være så lite som 2-5 m/sek i fjorden utenfor, men i sundet blåser det 8-12 m/sek!
Flemma is located in the mouth of the Sunndalsfjord. Here the mountains rises to approx 800meters and narrows the fjord to half its width. This creates a funnel effect in addition to the thermal winds caused by the sun. Just outside the Sunndalsfjord, the winds can average at 2 kts, but in Flemma you can expect winds from 16 to 25 knots on a day with no pressure difference generated wind!
Flemma krins har tilrettelagt et oppriggingsområde, og har ryddet stranden i launcheområdet.

Windsurfing is not a big sport in Norway, and especially not in the county of Romsdal. Flemma is a very tiny community, but has by far the biggest percentage of windsurfers in any part of Romsdal.
